Snow has arrived in most of Wisconsin and the trails are opening up!! Yippee, One of the most popular questions we get daily when the trails are open is… ” What do I need to legally ride the Wisconsin Snowmobile Trail” . The 3 things you need to be on the public Snowmobile Trails in Sauk County are a registered Snowmobile, State Trail Pass, & if you were born after 1.1.1985 you need a certificate of completion from a Snowmobile Safety Class. Recently Wisconsin implemented a State Trail Pass requirement in addition to your Snowmobile registration ( required for every snowmobile). It is best to apply for other of these items 21 days in advance of your snowmobile trip, however you can purchase these online and use your receipt as a temporary proof. If you find yourself in this situation, be prepared to be stopped by local law enforcement or DNR because you will not have your Trail pass and Registration visible if you pass them on the trail. You also need proof of your Snowmobile Safety Class if you were born after January 1st 1985.

  • Trail Pass | In addition to registration, you may need a Wisconsin snowmobile trail pass. This pass allows you to ride on designated snowmobile trails and is required for non-residents and residents who are not members of a snowmobile club. You can purchase trail passes online or from authorized vendors.
  •  Registration | Your snowmobile must be registered with the Wisconsin DNR. You will receive a registration sticker, which should be displayed on the snowmobile. Check your registration and get new registration here
  • Snowmobile Saftey Class | Snowmobile operators must meet age and licensing requirements. Generally, you must be at least 12 years old to operate a snowmobile on public trails, and if you were born after January 1, 1985, you need a snowmobile safety certificate. Types of Snowmobile Registration

All snowmobiles kept in Wisconsin for more than 15 consecutive days must be registered in Wisconsin unless an exemption to registration applies. Display — Unless there is an exemption, your snowmobile must display current registration decals, which must be prominently visible on both sides of the cowling.

  • Non Resident Registration
